La-Jin, An Ancient Chinese Home Exercise

An unknown ancient Chinese exercise called La-Jin, helps adjust the body’s energy channels called meridians and bones. It involves stretching ligaments and muscles of the body. This age-old Oriental technique is simple and easy to learn and can be done at home and practically anywhere.

What can La-Jin Do?

La-Jin repairs tendons and ligaments thus helping clean the urinary systems, treat numbness, and heal swelling and pain in the feet and hands. It does all this while decreasing pain and stiffness in the lumbar and neck region; moreover, La-Jin can treat cardiovascular problems.

The best thing about this exercise is that you don’t have to drive and waste gas, time and money to seek out an instructor. You can learn La-Jin yourself and practice it within the safe and pleasant confines of your home while watching TV.

La-Jin is made up of two basic exercises which include:

The Lie down position: On a La-Jin bench, raise one leg to 90° and tightly lean against the pole. Hold that position for about ten to twenty minutes, then lower your leg; repeat the exercise with your other leg.

Standing position: Touching both sides of a door frame, raise your hands and stretch as hard as you can. Also, with your left leg slightly bended, keep it stretched forward with the right leg as straight as possible. Hold this position for three minutes then repeat the exercise for another three minutes, this time with your right leg.

If performed on a La-Jin bench, these exercises can be extremely healthy and can help you live a pain-free life without drugs. La-Jin exercises that involve concentration and stretching routines also enhance muscle tone and help improve blood flow throughout your body.

La-Jin practically enables you to lose weight by melting away fats and keeping your joints in motion.

Some Helpful Tips for Newbies

For beginners, it’s important to remember that one might be unable to do the 90° leg exercise at first. It will take a bit of time to achieve this but whatever it is, begin, regardless if you’re able to only do 60° or less. It only requires constant practice. In no time at all, 90° is a cinch.

At the start, some people will obviously feel certain degrees of pains; therefore, we suggest that you begin the exercise gradually. Stretch as hard as you can but in a comfortable way and at your own leisurely pace. When you need to rest your leg on the plank, by all means do so.

Just follow through and use your own judgment.

Developing Your Mind, Body, And Soul Through The Practice Of Taoist Tai Chi

The Chinese internal practice of Taoist Tai Chi is a gentle form of martial art that guarantees the health and well-being of people who practice it.

Millions of people around the world are benefiting from the exercises of taoist tai chi. There are more than 500 training schools for this specific style of tai chi located in 25 countries across the world. While it has been in existence for centuries in Japan and China, taoist tai chi was brought to North America in 1970.

The basic intent of Taoist tai chi is to restore and facilitate health. It’s perhaps the gentlest form of exercise anyone can experience and is perfect for people who are recuperating and for old people. The movements are graceful, deliberate and slow and intended to help the student enhance his flexibility and strength.

When one practices taoist tai chi, painful muscles and joints can be alleviated since it relaxes the body through delicate stretches and turns. It is also a way to reinforce weak muscles and boost blood flow in the body. It can be also used to help dizzy or disoriented people regain their balance.

The delicate action of the exercises is also intended to help free anxieties and stress. Taoist tai chi is sometimes referred to as “meditation in motion” as the sequence of movements added with a feeling of mindfulness help to rejuvenate and repair both body and mind. Because the exercises are for working out and are so grounded in meditation, they can be considered as a form anti-aging exercise.

The physical aspect of Taoist Tai Chi is made up of basic principles referred to as the ‘Foundations’. The whole set of the Foundations is comprised of 108 movements. Some movements of the Foundations mimic the postures of animals or the military as is typical of all tai chi practices. But the movements are not as aggressive as the very ancient Frame styles like the Chen style.

In regard to the spiritual aspect of Taoist tai chi, the goal is to cultivate an inner sense knowing, wisdom, and peace that puts the practitioner in a spiritually strong position wherein they’re able to express generosity and compassion to others. The greatest objective of Taoist tai chi is to lose all self-centeredness and ego via the practice of this age-old technique of “meditation in motion.”

One can loosely compare Taoist tai chi to the Alexandra Technique that emphasizes on breathing, relaxation, posture, balance, correcting angles, lining up the spine, turning in spirals, watching the transfer of weight, opening and closing the limbs, and aligning and stretching the spine. The movements are performed with a relaxed but focused state of mind and are circular and gentle.

One pivotal component of Taoist Tai Chi is that it adopts the virtues of kindness, selflessness, and the annihilation of selfishness. It’s lived and not just practiced, your life changes although permanent change does not occur overnight and may be best taught through example by living a life in compassion, harmony, and in service to others.

Moderate Martial Arts Training Can Improve Your Sex Life

According to history, a Chinese emperor named Wu Di invited Bodhidharma, an Indian monk to China in 527 A.D. Bodhidharma came for the purpose of teaching Chinese monks certain exercises that could help strengthen their bodies. In the province of Henan, bandits regularly attacked the monks who were not trained on how to defend themselves.

After arriving in the Temple of Henan, Bodhidharma meditated for nine long years. After finishing his meditation, he wrote a couple of books entitled, “Xi Sui Jing” and “Yi Jin Jing.” The former was about breathing and meditating and the latter pertained to exercises that help develop external strength. After he finished these books, he again set out to write the Eighteen Hands of Lohan (Shi Bao Luo Han Shou) which described his experiences as a part of the rulers and warriors (Kshatriya) in India. This book was all about a series of defensive exercises. It was deemed by historians as the world’s first manual on defensive and offensive combat movements. This was how martial arts in China began.

This is why the postures in yoga and Chinese martial arts appear similar. Both cultures concentrated on the lower stomach area as the focus of all human energy (pneuma, qi, chi, ki). Yoga and the defense arts were both designed to increase lifespan, enhance an already healthy body, and bring about a state of bliss.

In Eastern philosophy, the esoteric power of the qi (pronounced chee) is the force responsible for self-recovery, self -healing, and self-awareness; and that, in the Universe, all life is inspired by this qi. This vital energy or “life force” that can be found in all living things is also the same energy that controls the entire universe. The Chinese word for life force is Qi; in Japanese, it is called Ki and in Greece, it is known as ‘pneuma’.

Clinical researchers have determined that martial artists utilize several features of fitness such as endurance, muscular strength, anaerobic and aerobic conditioning. Their practice also entails enhancing body composition, flexibility, coordination and motor skills. These modalities of training may provide practitioners a variety of health benefits that include improved endurance and stronger muscles, to name a few. Meditation is also included in martial arts training. Those periods of quietude may bring short moments of peace and relaxation to the practitioner. Martial art is actually considered by some as “meditation in motion.” Studies have revealed that frequent martial arts exercise can help boost your self-esteem and relieve stress.

Sexual health

The practice of the martial arts also goes beyond the system of meditation and self-defense; it’s also connected with the enhancement of general sexual performance and libido. People exercising frequently are bound to have less anxiety, more energy, higher testosterone levels and better self-esteem. Aside from improving a person’s overall health and firming his/her body, martial arts can also boost his/her sex life. Martial arts practice involves thorough bodily exertion. This doesn’t mean that you need to overdo it since Bodhidharma also taught his student monks the virtue of moderation. Even in martial arts, he instructed them to refrain from over-training and to care for their bodies first. Research shows that extremely rigorous physical training can directly lead to sterility. An examination by health scientists show that too much exercising leads to fatigue, that then decreases temporarily the quality and count of sperm. Other studies suggest that during ejaculation, people who exercised to the point of exhaustion manufactured less sperm. Experts explain during training, the body “kills” itself literally. After enhancing and building muscles, the body needs to recover in order to go back creating healthy normal cells again. Extreme physical activities may lower hormone levels in the bloodstream that can influence sperm production. Medical researchers believe that after about three days, the levels of sperm in a man return to almost normal. They also believe that drinking coffee after a few hours of training may protect the quality of the sperm due to the antioxidants contained in caffeine.

Knowing the benefits of exercise and martial arts can certainly bring about a positive impact in a person’s life. If these arts are performed properly, it can lead to better health, and an even better sex life.

Acupuncture and Herbal Remedies to Allay the Symptoms of IBS and IBD

Millions of Americans are affected each year by digestive problems like IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome) and IBD (Inflammatory Bowel Disease). IBS is actually the second most common cause of absences from school or work. Acupuncture and other modalities offered by TCM (Traditional Chinese Medicine) in Tarzana allow patients with these two conditions to enjoy stress-free and pain-free lives. There are some substantial differences between IBS and IBD, despite them sporting similar monikers.

A disorder solely affecting the function of the gastrointestinal system, IBS, according to Western medicine, has no known infectious, biochemical, or anatomical cause. The classification of syndrome suggests that the diagnosis depends on the manifestation of a set of symptoms that oftentimes develop alongside each other. Constipation, diarrhea, bloating, flatulence, and stomach pain are the main symptoms of IBS. Eating usually triggers the discomfort and eased once the person has passed stool. If you want more information regarding IBS, visit the Internal Foundation for Functional Gastrointestinal Disorders’ website.

IBD, on the other hand, pertains to chronic inflammatory diseases such as Ulcerative Colitis and Crohn’s Disease. IBD affects the mucosal wall of the digestive tract. Ulcerative Colitis (UC) is an inflammation solely of the external layer of the colon’s mucous membrane. UC symptoms are oftentimes more than that of Crohn’s Disease and if not addressed, may result in hospitalization. Stomach cramping, constant diarrhea, mucus or blood in the stools, and a strong urge to defecate are the telltale signs of UC. Attention must be paid to the patient due to the involvement of blood loss, to ensure his/her well being. Visual confirmation from an X-ray test or a colonoscopy is how diagnosis of UC is usually done. When it comes to Crohn’s Disease, the entire tissue of the digestive tract can be potentially inflamed and while it usually affects the colon and small intestine’s distal ileum, Crohn’s can develop along any point in the digestive tract. If you want to learn more about Crohn’s Disease and Ulcerative Colitis, visit the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation of America website.

Western modes of therapy for these two GI conditions are varied and can involve lifestyle or dietary modifications and in severe cases, surgery or permanent medication. Stress contributes hugely in the rise of symptoms although at this point both IBD and IBS have no known definite cause. From the perspective of Chinese medicine, IBD and IBS mainly fall under the sphere of a spleen dysfunction. According to Chinese medicine, the spleen is the organ responsible for transporting and transforming the food we consume; in other words, this organ controls the processes of digestion and assimilation of nutrients from food in the body. Gastrointestinal problems such as IBD or IBS arise when the spleen malfunctions in any way. When stress causes the symptoms to become severe, this suggests that the liver’s function is either overwhelming or impairing the spleen’s digestive efforts. It is the liver that helps energy or Qi to move smoothly within the body and when this flow is blocked or becomes erratic, our body systems get affected in a huge way.

Acupuncture and Chinese medicine are used to strengthen and tonify the spleen. They accomplish these by nourishing the acupuncture points. Chinese herbal remedies help relax the liver by allowing the Qi to flow smoothly throughout the body. The other symptoms can be resolved via a therapy that can help restore regular bowel movements, eliminate bloating and gas, and stop the bleeding in the gut.

Acupuncture and Chinese medicine can provide a way to alleviate IBD or IBS symptoms. Still, there are some basic things you can do yourself that can help raise your quality of life and better manage your symptoms. These can include:

1. Talk about your condition: Look for a support group where you can talk about your condition with other people suffering from the same problem you have. It can help you a lot since you can gain a new perspective that will help you understand your condition more clearly. Also, when you join a support group you may know the forms of treatment that work for others and find doctors who are highly experienced in treating your condition. You can also find tips or hints on how to better cope with this condition which you can use to create an environment in which genuine emotional and physical healing can take place. Visit the aforementioned websites to find support groups in or near your area.

2. Use herbal medicines: One of the best herbs for digestive disorders is chamomile. This plant is widely touted as an excellent remedy for stomach cramping and inflammation and is also an amazing nerve relaxant. Turmeric is another powerful herb that is known to lessen the damage caused by inflammation. To help allay stomach discomfort from gas and bloating, a high quality probiotic is recommended.

3. Dietary modifications: Changing one’s diet has a tremendous positive impact on the symptoms of IBD and IBS. The issue, however, is that no one uniform diet can be recommended for all sufferers. Monitor the foods you eat and the symptoms that may come about and log them in a food journal or diary. This way you will eventually be able to form a picture of what foods set off the symptoms. Some of the foods that usually cause inflammation which you need to avoid include alcohol, refined sugars, and difficult to digest foods like seeds or nuts. Foods that are hard to digest can overwork an already malfunctioning digestive system.

4. Lower your stress levels: We now know that stress plays a huge role in the degradation of your gastrointestinal health and so to combat it you can do activities that can help your body and mind to relax. First of all, avoid stressful situations as much as possible. Second, you can lessen the harmful effects of stress by performing meditation or breathing exercises. Some have even suggested mantra and/or hypnosis to help relieve stress related to IBD or IBS.

5. Exercise: Exercise is also one way of lowering the levels of stress in your body. One excellent anti stress exercise is yoga due to its several twisting motions and poses that actually massage the intestines that help boost blood circulation to the gut.

IBD, IBS, and other digestive diseases will affect your physical condition and emotional state in a major way. There are several treatment options you can try in spite of the fact that there is no specific cure for these diseases and that no specific cause for them that has been identified. Acupuncture and Chinese medicine are just two of these although their emphasis on whole body balance and natural wellness can definitely help you manage your gastrointestinal condition in a much better way.

Enjoying a Whole Year Free of Allergies with Acupuncture Treatment

What makes springtime the best season of the year? Picnics, beautiful flowers, warm weather? While each of us may have a specific reason to love spring, there is also a certain side to this season that makes some people dread it: seasonal allergies. Drugs (over-the-counter and prescription) are widely available; the sad thing though is that they are quite ineffective in preventing allergies and in improving overall health. Moreover, these medications come with a number of unpleasant side effects. On the other hand, we also have natural and alternative therapies such as acupuncture that not only is able to treat allergy symptoms but also helps restore balance in the body. With acupuncture, overall health is achieved and allergies are resolved. This is because treatment also addresses the underlying condition and not only the symptoms.

Allergy symptoms include fatigue, headaches, runny nose, and itchy eyes. Precipitating factors that cause seasonal allergies include weeds, grasses, and pollen of flowers in trees.

Some of the side effects that over the counter and prescription pharmaceutical drugs produce include a temporary loss of the sufferer’s taste and smell as well as stomach pain, wheezing, fatigue, and headaches. Moreover, these drugs are ineffective in preventing the rise of future allergies and in improving health.

An imbalance in the immune system is often the underlying reason why allergies come about. Therefore, fortifying and balancing the immune system is the ideal thing to do to lessen or even cure yourself of seasonal allergies altogether.

Below are Helpful Tips to Help Reduce Allergy Attacks:

1. Avail yourself of a homeopathic allergy treatment – this type of remedy works by matching the vibrations of a certain remedy to the vibrations of your symptoms. When the two frequencies match, they cancel out the symptoms leading to the improvement of your health.

2. Consume a lot of raw foods, more so during spring and summer. Doing so keeps our body strong and functioning optimally.

3. Take a mineral/multivitamin supplement all through the year guarantee that your body will perform at its maximum.

4. Eat honey produced in your area – to make sure you don’t have a reaction to the honey, taste a small bit of it first. Bees that produce honey in your area carry bee pollen from local flowers. So, when you taste a bit of the honey you are in a way putting an antibody in your body that counters the reaction to the pollen you are allergic to. This can make you immune to the allergen that’s been plaguing you during spring season.

5. Consume seasonal, local foods. Doing so keeps us in balance and in tune with the regular cycles around us.

6. Receive acupuncture.

Treating Allergies with Acupuncture in Pembroke Pines

If you want to treat your seasonal allergy symptoms naturally, safely, and effectively, acupuncture is a treatment you should consider to bring your body into balance. This way, your seasonal allergies can be resolved in the long-term and may lead to the complete curing of your allergies.

Acupuncture Works for Seasonal Allergies in a Couple of Ways:

1. Restores the body into balance.

2. Relieves the symptomatic conditions of fatigue, headaches, stuffiness, and itchy eyes.

Treating the Symptoms

In treating allergy symptoms, acupuncture is extremely beneficial. Most of the symptoms of allergy are experienced above the neck, specifically, in the head (itchy eyes, headache, stuffiness, etc.) When you have an allergy reaction it is an indication that energy and blood does not circulate normally from the head to the rest of the body, and vice versa. All the pathways of yang energy travel from the head down to the feet, or from the hands up to the head. These pathways in the shoulders and neck need to be cleared of obstructions in order to enable the normal flow of energy, nutrients, and blood.

Through the insertion of sterile, small needles on acupoints that are affected by symptoms felt on the side of the nose or head or pain, acupuncture can treat the symptoms locally. The treatment releases the stuck energy enabling it to flow unhindered throughout the body.

One of the more important benefits of acupuncture is that it keeps the body steady. The acupuncturist achieves this by first taking a comprehensive intake and exhaustive determination of every patient who comes in for treatment. Each patient is treated individually and very specifically, ensuring that the root cause of his/her allergies as well as all other symptoms is resolved. The restoration of balance in the body results in the disappearance of symptoms and the restoration of health. This is what acupuncture can do: bring back the proper balance in the individual in order for his/her body to self-heal emotionally, mentally, and physically.

To prevent allergies from dampening that time of the year that’s supposed to ring in hope and warmth, one needs to consider acupuncture. This mode of relief brings long term benefits that result in a higher level of health and a better appreciation of life.

Some Helpful Tips for Treating Mild or Severe Cases of Iron-Deficiency Anemia

Women more than men are affected by anemia, to date an estimated 400 million women all over the world suffer from this condition and a lot of them aren’t even aware of its mild symptoms. They mistakenly believe that the symptoms are due to the stresses of life. Anemia literally translates to “without blood.” It denotes a disorder characterized by a lack of red blood cells or a deficiency in hemoglobin of these cells.

The main function of red blood cells is to move oxygen from the lungs to body cells in which oxygen is swapped with carbon dioxide. A lack of oxygen supply makes the cells weak thus resulting in a weak body lacking in energy.

Anemia is usually the result of poor red blood cell production, excessive red blood cell destruction or too much loss of blood. It may manifest in different types with the most common being iron deficiency anemia. Without an adequate amount of iron, hemoglobin cannot be made. Iron is an essential substance in the production of hemoglobin. Iron deficiency anemia or IDA is a common disorder among pregnant women. Woman who are of child bearing age are more prone to DA than men because of their monthly menstrual cycles.

One other cause for iron deficiency anemia is inadequate consumption of foods rich in iron. The body’s inability to absorb iron can be another cause for anemia. Longstanding illnesses and diseases that cause blood loss or affect the production of new blood can cause anemia as well. Some of these illnesses include bleeding hemorrhoids, bone marrow disease and peptic ulcer.

According to the traditional view of Chinese medicine, blood is as an essential material for the creation of the body organs, muscles, skin, nerves and bones. The Shen or spirit is also found in blood and this Shen is what balances the psyche. In traditional Chinese medicine, a condition known as “blood deficiency” can best be exemplified in iron-deficiency anemia although the Chinese definition of blood deficiency doesn’t entirely correspond with that of the Western medical definition of anemia.

Anemia may result in the following symptoms:

Tinnitus (ringing in the ear)
Irritability
Headache
Shortness of breath
Swollen or sore tongue
Increased hart rate
Dizziness
Fatigue
Pale nail beds and lips
Sallow or pale complexion

There may be anemia sufferers who may exhibit unusual symptoms like having a desire to eat paint, dirt, or ice. Other anemia symptoms include

A poor appetite
Dry skin
Dry and thinning hair and hair that is prematurely graying
Unusual loss of hair
Amenorrhea (absence of menstruation) or delayed menses
Scanty periods
Numbness of the limbs
Insomnia
Blurry vision
Heart palpitations

Anemia Treatment

In treating anemia, the first thing you need to do is to determine the underlying factor(s) causing this disorder. This is done through diagnostic tests recommended by a medical physician or a qualified health care professional. If the cause is a condition such as peptic ulcer, you need to resolve that condition first. If your anemia is caused by an improper diet, this can be easily rectified.

If you think you’re suffering from anemia, your doctor can request a blood test to determine the amount of serum ferritin, hematocrit, hemoglobin and red blood cells in your body.

Using traditional Chinese medicine for the treatment of iron deficiency anemia usually means availing of Chinese herbs and acupuncture to nourish blood and tonify energy (qi) respectively. These two modalities are always combined with a diet laden with iron. If needed, iron supplements can also be included in the treatment. Pregnant women require an intake of 30 mg of iron each day while infants need a daily dose of 6 mg.

To be sure about the right dose for you, consult with your doctor. You should not take too much iron as it can cause constipation and may even make you at risk of a heart attack. Too much iron in your body can also disrupt your body’s uptake of essential trace minerals. To treat constipation, fiber supplements or a diet rich in fiber is needed.

Some of the foods to eat with high amounts of iron if you have mild anemia include:

Yams
Whole grains
Parsley
Seaweeds
Almonds
Raisins and prunes
Dried apricots
Blackstrap molasses
Dried beans
Green leafy vegetables

For severe blood deficiency or anemia, some of the iron-rich foods to eat include:

Chicken
Lamb
Oysters
Lean meat
Beef liver

Foods to improve the body’s absorption of iron include strawberries, tomatoes and other citrus foods as well as vitamin C supplements and other foods rich in vitamin C. Foods that can slow down the body’s capacity to absorb iron include candy bars, ice cream, beer, soft drinks, chocolate, rhubarb, Swiss chard, spinach, wheat bran, coffee and tea. Too much intake of calcium supplements and antacids can also weaken iron absorption functionality.

Removing Psoriasis with Acupuncture

Acupuncture is an ancient Asian healing procedure that has been practiced in several eastern societies and cultures for thousands of years. In the United States, this treatment only gained popularity during the past several decades. Acupuncture has been used to treat psoriasis and acne since it has been proven to be a very effective treatment for these skin conditions.

A study done in 1992 was for evaluating acupuncture’s efficacy for the treatment of several skin allergies and conditions. Done in China, the study involved 61 subjects who did not respond to the common treatment protocols. The conductors of the study performed controlled acupuncture on nine separate sessions compared to the mainstream treatment protocols.

They stated that the acupuncture treatment was a success. More than half of the test group given acupuncture showed remissions in their illnesses and in certain instances has led to the complete cure of their illness. The study also showed that the majority of the subjects showed a substantial improvement of their quality of life and conditions.

Based on acupuncture medicine, the body possesses special sections known as meridians. Meridians, according to eastern medicine, are known to help rectify energy dispersal restore balance and bring back balance throughout the body. Practitioners of eastern medicine believe that by targeting affected meridians, they help remove nervous conditions and blockages and restore natural function that may result in a number of skin allergies.

In western countries, studies involving acupuncture have also been done although most of them failed to produce solid outcomes to prove that acupuncture works. Be that as it may, individual cases consistently have proven that acupuncture helps improve conditions and should not be ignored as an alternative to conventional medicine. Some individuals suffering from psoriasis and acne who have tried acupuncture have shown a huge improvement in their symptoms after getting this non-invasive therapy.

Acupuncture has shown to be very effective in treating a condition known as psoriatic arthritis. This condition is a disease that causes the joints to become inflamed. It leads to severe pain for the poor sufferer. Acupuncture has been used to remove the pain by controlling the problematic meridians.

Acupuncture as a stand-alone treatment may not be potent enough in treating major conditions. A growing number of western medical doctors are now using it as an adjunct therapy to conventional treatment procedures. So, if you happen to be suffering from skin irritation or allergies you need to consider getting acupuncture combined with a mainstream medical therapy.

Tinnitus Treatments and Drugs

If your doctor has deemed that your tinnitus is a symptom of a much deeper health problem, then he may focus on a plan to treat the underlying condition first. If, the tinnitus stems from exposure to loud noise or if it does not get better after treatment, the doctor may then consider using some non-medical approaches geared to the elimination, reduction or masking of the tinnitus noise. There are instances when the tinnitus goes away all by itself without medical or non-medical intervention. There are types of tinnitus, however, that cannot be reduced or resolved regardless of what treatment plan your doctor may use.

Patients having a hard time dealing with tinnitus should join a support group or seek counseling for help. You can ask your doctor for any referral.

Too much wax in the ear can also cause tinnitus. If you have this problem, your physician will either clear your ears off the wax using a curette which is a small curved instrument or by suctioning them off with a vacuum via a small suctioning tube placed in the ear and connected to small vacuum machine. An ear infection can also cause tinnitus. Treatment for this problem is prescription ear drops consisting of hydrocortisone that addresses the infection and itching.

Sometimes surgery may be needed when factors like otosclerosis (calcium accumulation on the ear bone), cyst or tumor become the causes of your tinnitus.

Tinnitus symptoms due to a problem called the temporomandibular joint syndrome or TMJ will probably be handled by a dental specialist, orthodontist or other dental expert for the right treatment.

Tinnitus Medications

A lot of drug treatments for tinnitus have been studied. Certain tinnitus patients have found relief from their symptoms using minimal amounts of antidepressants such as Elavil or anti-anxiety drugs like Valium. A typical anesthetic like Lidocaine can be used as treatment for specific forms of irregular heart rhythms and even for tinnitus relief for certain individuals. This drug should be utilized into the middle ear or intravenously to effectively work.

Hearing Aids

For patients whose tinnitus comes with certain degrees of hearing loss, doctors may recommend a hearing aid for them.

Masking Devices

A lot of individuals have had great success for their tinnitus using tinnitus maskers. These are devices that look like hearing aids that run a more pleasant sound into the ear to mask the irritating tinnitus noise. One other and newer tinnitus device functions as a masker and as a hearing aid at the same time.

Tinnitus Retraining Therapy (TRT)

This therapy tries to subliminally insert a signal into the brain and buries it in the subconscious level to keep it from surfacing onto conscious perception. This process is called habituation and people with tinnitus usually habituate many types of sounds like gentle rain, refrigerators, fans, computer fans and air conditioners among others. All these sounds are seen or perceived as low or soft sounds which can enable the brain to filter them out.

TRT consists of two parts:

A tinnitus patient will play a specific neutral sound every time and probably will use in-the-ear sound generators. Another part of TRT involves the patient going into one-on-one counseling.

The whole duration of tinnitus retraining therapy may last 1 to 2 years and usually works when handled by a competent therapist.

Cognitive Therapy

Cognitive therapy counsels a tinnitus patient to assist him to change his response to his tinnitus symptoms. This therapy is often effective when combined with complementary therapies like medication, masking or acupuncture among others.

Biofeedback

Biofeedback aids tinnitus sufferers into modifying their responses to their tinnitus by using a certain form of relaxation technique. Some sufferers do find this technique very effective.

Dental Treatment

There are medical researchers who think that tinnitus can come from certain problems in the temporomandibular joint (TMJ). This is the part of the face where jaw bone connects to the cranium, just in front of the ear. These researchers recommend dental treatment to address tinnitus symptoms since the ear may be affected by the nerves and muscles in the jaw which are very proximal and connected to those in the ear.

Cochlear Implants

A cochlear implant is surgically embedded in the ear, to address severe deafness. They can also help minimize the effects of severe tinnitus-related hearing loss. This implant sends electrical signals from the ear to the brain.

Acupuncture

Acupuncture is part of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) which sees tinnitus as an imbalance of two energy principles called yin and yang. Tinnitus is believed to be caused by a yang rising pattern which means that the body has too much fire inside it. The rising of heat means the yin principle is deficient or lacking in the body causing an imbalance that is the underlying problem. The lack of yin or cooling and rise in heat energy can lead to the ringing in the ears, dizziness, irritability and burning eyes.

For a great number of tinnitus patients the treatment plan can entail herbal remedies and acupuncture to furnish the body with nourishment at a deeper level. Some patients suffering from tinnitus caused by too much loud noise exposure or from drugs may find treatment using tinnitus acupuncture combined with herbal remedies, lifestyle changes and dietary changes. Acupuncture and all forms of TCM are basically holistic types of treatment that do not merely address the presenting symptoms, but the root problem as well. With acupuncture, the acupuncturist can halt the pattern of discord and aid the body to go back to its optimal state of health. This type of treatment plan is occasionally termed as preventative health care approach.

Since TCM is a holistic type of treatment, the factors that lead to tinnitus (the energy imbalance of yin and yang) can be remedied to bring the body into an overall good state of health. As with all forms of natural treatment, acupuncture’s goal is to treat or even cure tinnitus by helping the body find a way to heal itself.

Sciatica Coping and Support

Most people with sciatica think that lying in bed is a wise thing to do in dealing with their pain. The fact is activities are the most ideal ways to start healing sciatica. You can rest for a couple of days to three days but anything longer than that will only weaken your back muscles which may make the discomfort and pain worse.

If you are not mobile, your vertebral system weakens. When you are active, your spinal discs become healthy and become well lubricated as well by the gels in the discs.

A regular and mild way of exercising is encouraged. You can perform certain stretching exercises. Yoga can do wonders for your sciatica. This wonderful exercise and relaxation technique helps relax tense muscles and maximizes spaces in between your spinal vertebrae allowing more free space for the spinal nerves. Of course, depending on the type of sciatica you have, certain activities should not be done. To know what type of activity or exercise is good for you, you need to consult with your doctor.

You can avail of prescription medication for your sciatic pain. Codeine and ibuprofen are some of the more common prescribed drugs by doctors.

For severe pain, your doctor can inject you with a shot of cortisone given often only as a short-term solution. All medications in fact are mere short-term solutions and oftentimes changing your lifestyle may be all you need to make your sciatic pain go away permanently or at least on a long-term basis.

Crushed ice and heat therapy are also very good remedies for sciatic pain and are simple to do. After you have suffered an injury, you can immediately put an ice pack to the affected area to lessen the pain and the swelling. Use the crushed ice for about 15 to 20 minutes, no more, no less. Rest the area for about 30 minutes and then apply the ice again for the same amount of time. Never use heat therapy while applying ice therapy.

Heat therapy is typically used after two days after the injury. This type of therapy improves blood flow hastening the recovery process. Perform heat therapy for half an hour then take one hour off before resuming the therapy.
