Acupuncture for IBD

According to a new study, acupuncture is an ideal treatment for inflammatory bowel diseases or IBD.  IBD is a number of conditions that pertains to digestive tract inflammation and includes the conditions of Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis and other chronic intestinal diseases marked by diarrhea and stomach pain. The conductors of the study have found that electro-acupuncture inhibited IBD by normalizing peristalsis through its effective effects on the sympathetic nervous system.

The health of the intestines can benefit greatly from acupuncture. In other related studies, acupuncture has shown to have a positive effect towards the treatment of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS).  This particular study involved 11 investigations meta-analyzed and included 950 subjects in total. The ones who did the study concluded that moxibustion along with acupuncture is clinically more effective, and safe than pharmaceutical drugs for treating IBS conditions.

These relatively new studies mirror results of an earlier test that was published in The Journal of the American Medical Association involving the efficacy of traditional Chinese medicine for treating gastrointestinal diseases. The old study showed that Chinese herbal therapy helps improve symptoms for certain patients with IBS. The Durham, North Carolina based Duke University Medical Center did a review that was published in the Journal of Gastroenterology. The review stated that acupuncture had antinociceptive and antiemetic qualities and posits acupuncture to be a potentially ideal treatment for functional dyspepsia , functional gastrointestinal dysfunction and gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD).
