Definition of Anxiety

By definition anxiety is a mental state of restlessness exhibited by feelings of worry and substantial fear that cause physiological effects such as trembling, sweating, shallow and short breathing and palpitations.

Other common anxiety symptoms include:

  • Confusion, panic and fear
  • Dizziness
  • Hyperventilation
  • A feeling that you’re like dying or going “insane”
  • Sleeping difficulties (insomnia)
  • Feeling that your problem is beyond your control
  • Irritability
  • Feeling tired
  • Inability to concentrate
  • Consistent feeling of urination
  • Difficulty swallowing
  • Chest tightness and pain
  • Dry mouth

Anxiety can be felt by a person every day in varying degrees.  Anxiety is a normal part of a person’s experience.
